BLONDES HAVE MORE FUN//FINE ART DOG PHOTOGRAPHER JESSE FREIDIN

How does the saying go — ‘blondes have more fun’? I can never remember. All I know is that these two gorgeous Golden Retrievers were tail-wagging, tongue-lolling, and more than eager for a friendly butt scratch during our entire session. We just hung out on the front stoop (which had perfect open shade for photographing) and took it easy. The result was a very relaxed ‘day in the life’ series of images that capture the sibling relationship between these two wonderful creatures, and the devotion they constantly show their mom (who, by the way, is an amazing private dog walker in Los Angeles).

After our session we walked out to the car and could see the Hollywood sign looming over us, up in the hills. Being a true man of adventure, my assistant and I dusted off the layers of Golden Retriever hair from our clothes, put on our hiking shoes, and headed out for a quick little hike – see photos here.

Every once in a while I meet an artist whose work I truly love and respect. Then I make them my friend. And convince them to do a barter.

Lili Chin (of Doggie Drawings: www.doggiedrawings.net) is an artist like me- her work is original and fun and personal, and all about dogs. It celebrates the character of our very special companions in a way no other illustrator out there can. You can’t help but smile and laugh when you look through her portfolio. And you also can’t help yourself from commissioning her to illustrate your dog, and then sending her 45million cute photos of your dog, from all angles, at all ages, in all stages of cuteness, to give her an idea of his character. Or, your obsessive personality. Either.

For our barter, Lili created two amazing illustrations of Pancake (my beloved Boston Terrier), and in turn I photographed Boogie (her beloved Boston Terrier). It was a really interesting study on how two artists express themselves, and how their unique styles capture a similar character and emotion, in completely different mediums. Below are Lili’s illustrations, and then my favorite photos of Boogie. Enjoy!

THE FLAT BRUTUS PROJECT//FINE ART DOG PHOTOGRAPHER JESSE FREIDIN

Sometimes it’s hard being an only child- you get bored, nobody understands you, there’s never anyone to play with. It’s a rough life. Pancake, being the spoiled only child he is, has been asking me for a brother every day for the past few months. “Dad, I’m soooooooooo bored. This is boring! We go to work and you do stuff and all I get to do is fart on people and sleep. Booooooooooring!”. So, being the good dad that I am, I recently granted Pancake his wish. The stork delivered a very unique, and 2-dimensional, dog brother in flat ‘standard mail’ package. His name was Flat Brutus, and he visited us for a few weeks- traveling with me from San Francisco, to Los Angeles, to Boston, Cape Cod, and New York. Here is our story:

First, Pancake and Flat Brutus had some serious catching up to do. P: “Hi, I’m Pancake. Are you my new brother?”  FB: “…..”   P: “Um, why aren’t you moving? You’re really skinny. No one gives you treats? I get treats all the time.”   FB: “……”   P: “Whatever, you’re flat. That’s cool.”   FB: “……”

Then Pancake took Flat Brutus to one of his favorite spots in Cape Cod:   P: “We’ve got a pretty sick view from up on this hill, Brutus.”    FB: “….”

Then we all went to visit Boogie- one of our favorite Boston Terriers on the planet!

Boogie’s mom is the infamous Lili Chin- mastermind behind Doggie Drawings, and creator of the original Flat Brutus illustration! It was a heartwarming reunion for everyone involved:

Finally, I took Flat Brutus for a brisk walk up to the Hollywood sign.

I think he really enjoyed basking in the lime-light, and told me he had hopes of getting his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame one day. Being the good dad that I am, I told him that if he tried hard enough, he just might achieve that goal. Then I stuffed him back in his envelope and sent him on his way.

Want to get involved in the Flat Brutus Project? You can! It’s fun, easy, and raises crucial funding for the French Bulldog Rescue Network.
