KARISSA AND SAM//FINE ART DOG PHOTOGRAPHER JESSE FREIDIN

I recently was commissioned to photograph two very talented personalities of the Hollywood stage: Karissa Shannon (former Playboy bunny, favorite of Hugh Hefner, and star of ‘Girls Next Door’- the reality show about the Playboy Mansion), and her boyfriend Sam Jones III (star of ‘Smallville’ and ‘Blue Mountain State’). It was a very very hot day in the Hollywood hills, but we managed to keep the energy fun, relaxed, and intimate. My assistant and I took advantage of Sam’s wonderful back yard, and we even loaded some *gasp* color film into the Hassie!!

Karissa and Sam live with their 3 dogs: Jones (baby Yorkie), Johnny (gorgeous Belgian Malinois), and Ambrosious (scruffy/silly Shitzu-mix). They had just picked up Jones the morning of our session, but he was already adjusting well to his new life in Hollywood. It was a very fun challenge to go between Jones’ exhausted puppy energy, to Ambrosious’ ridiculous antics and lounging, to Johnny’s intensity and strength. Keeping the energy calm, the people cool, and the dogs relaxed kept us all on our toes, but I couldn’t be happier with the images from our session. Below are some of my favorites:

SIR WALTER//FINE ART DOG PHOTOGRAPHER JESSE FREIDIN

I love photographing small dogs, especially Dachshunds, because their personalities and mannerisms are squeezed so tightly into such a small amount of space. They are like frozen juice concentrate- so much intensity in a tiny package.

Walter is a great example of this. He is regal, beautiful, and walks with an air of hugeness that truly hits you right in the chest. Really, Walter? You’re so tiny and gentle, but have no idea that you are a ‘small dog.’ How could that be?? He had me laughing through our entire session. The little pitter-patter of his feet scurrying ahead of us kept a sensation of excitement present, yet when he jumped up on his favorite foot stool, or lounged with his mom by the pool, he puffed his chest and held his head high. Like he was king of the house. It was beautiful, and the images below are some of my favorites from our session.

IN THE NEWS//FINE ART DOG PHOTOGRAPHER JESSE FREIDIN

In the past few months, my photography has been getting a lot of  international attention. How exciting, and rewarding. Here are a few fun places my name has recently shown up:

Modern Dog Magazine did an amazing article on my Doggie Gaga Project, as well as a fun interview with me. They were one of the first big publications to contact me about the popularity of the DGP, and I can’t hide the face that I was a bit frazzled for that first week. Who wouldn’t have been?!? Their summer issue has the article, and is in stores now. So go pick up a copy, take a look at some of their favorite DGP photos, and get a little look into my world. www.moderndogmagazine.com

Another fun place The Doggie Gaga Project has popped up is with a very friendly group of French actors. We’ve had a very, er, funny exchange of emails and phone calls over the past few weeks. They kept asking why I didn’t speak French. And I really didn’t have a very good answer. But we managed to get through our funny conversations, and they decided to use Xotchil’s image or the poster for their newest production. I have no idea what it says– any one want to help translate?

BUDDHABARK’S WONDERPARK//FINE ART DOG PHOTOGRAPHER JESSE FREIDIN

This weekend I was a featured guest at BuddhaBark’s second amazing celebrity/canine event in Hollywood. It was sunny, it was full of amazing talented faces (and dogs), and I had so much fun talking to everyone about my work. People told me stories of their aging dogs, of their devotion to their animal companions, of their families and producers and famous friends who would “die to have photographs like these.” I met dog lovers, cat lovers, horse lovers, and one woman with a few monkeys, an iguana, and a pack of seven dogs. Wow. The doggie fashion show and agility demonstrations were incredible, and it was an all-around wonderful event to be part of. Below are some fun shots (taken by my supertastic assistant, DC) of the weekend:

I love meeting other photographers. This guy and I talked shop about the beauty of film, his years as a professional photographer, shooting in old coal mines with transparency film, and, of course, his love for his canines.

WELCOME TO HOLLYWOOD//FINE ART DOG PHOTOGRAPHER JESSE FREIDIN

Well, we’ve arrived. Again.

It’s my third trip to Los Angeles this year, and so far things are going swimmingly. In preparation for the long, busy week ahead, my assistant and I took a trip up to the Hollywood sign. I’ve always wanted to hike up there, touch the sign, photograph the sign, get close to that mysterious, historic icon. Up close and personal it’s just like any other sign. Kind of big, kind of dirty, kind of hard to photograph. But, it was a great way to get the creative juices flowing.

Tomorrow we get all cleaned up and head to BuddhaBark’s Wonderpark, in celebration of the MTV Movie Awards. It’s going to be an amazing weekend of meeting some big names in Hollywood, introducing them to my photography, and just getting a chance to chat a bit, one on one. I’ve got some great marketing materials, great big prints, and a great team behind me for this event, and I can’t wait to knock the socks off of LA.

And who’s that funny little fellow riding shotgun in my car? He’s flat, he’s cute….. must be Flat Brutus! Much more on Flat Brutus coming up, but if you’re curious – check out his website.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE//FINE ART DOG PHOTOGRAPHER JESSE FREIDIN

Every artist has their favorite tools, and it takes years to find them. Whether it’s the perfect paint brush, the perfect piece of charcoal, the perfect chisel or guitar strings or armchair to write in. As an artist- when you find these items, you hang on to them. They become part of you, and part of your creative process. In my mind, my tools are like my team mates- we work seamlessly together, think for each other, challenge each other, and create the kind of art that we love. My tools allow me to express my creativity in a very magical way, and then turn that magic into something very technical.

So, let me introduce you to my team:

Film: Ilford HP5 Plus/ 120 format

This is an even-keeled black and white film known for it’s dependability, versatility, and great grain structure. I use medium format (120) film, which means each negative is 2.25 inches square- that’s huge! A larger negative means incredible enlargements with gorgeous tone and unbeatable detail.

Each roll of film is loaded by hand into a film back. Once loaded, the film back is attached to my camera. Each roll holds 12 exposures.

Camera: Hasselblad 500C

The Hasselblad is known as one of the most revered portrait cameras ever made. It was taken on the first Apollo space mission, and a favorite of photographers such as Richard Avedon and Annie Leibovitz. Its unique square format and incredibly crisp, warm images give the Hasselblad its famous signature feel. This is an unmistakably professional, old fashioned film camera, and after years of photographing together it feels like a true extension of my eye. Because every single piece of this camera is completely manual, it forces me to constantly think on my feet and make accurate decisions about exposure, composition, and timing with every frame.

Making contact sheets is how I proof the images from each Photography Session, and is a very important step in my process. It allows me to preview each exposure, compare frames, and decide which images are the most perfect. Here are a few contact sheets from a recent session:

Paper: Ilford Fiber based Glossy Warmtone

Photographic fiber based papers have an appearance, weight and quality that give them a truly ‘hand crafted’ feel, and are the only true option for skilled printers and discriminating collectors. The warm tone of this paper gives each print a soft, inviting, silky feel that develops while in the darkroom. Working with such emotional subject such as dogs, this paper is a great way to add yet another layer of beauty to each print. Fiber based paper is also incredibly durable, and after it has been washed in my archival trays, sets the image so that it will last for generations.

And, last but not least…..

Treats: Zuke’s Peanut Butter and Blueberry (wheat free/chicken free)

My dog is allergic to wheat and chicken, and he goes bonkers for these treats. Because I understand the plight of a sensitive dog stomach, I always carry  allergen-free treats.
