SAN FRANCISCO HOLDS FIRST DOGGIE GAGA EXHIBIT//FINE ART DOG PHOTOGRAPHER JESSE FREIDIN

Amidst all the Doggie Gaga media attention, international interviews, requests for television appearances, and general all-around amazingness, I have been holding out for the perfect place to hold the very first public exhibit of the images. After long consideration, I’ve decided to showcase the work at one of my favorite San Francisco dog boutiques- Best In Show. A staple of the famous Castro neighborhood, Best In Show recently won ‘Beast of the Bay’ 2010 – just like me! So, clearly, it’s a match made in doggie heaven.

ROUND 2 DOGGIE GAGA//FINE ART DOG PHOTOGRAPHER JESSE FREIDIN

The moment that everyone has been waiting for is finally here!

I want to thank my amazing team for all their efforts and creativity in making this a reality.  Also, a special thank you goes out to all the Doggie Gaga models – to everyone’s surprise, they didn’t mind the costumes (behold the power of peanut butter blueberry treats!!)  The experience is really indescribable in words, thus this time around, we are not only launching new photos, but also a behind-the-scenes video. Come take a look at the madness of the shoot, meet the doggie models, and see me manning one of my favorite stdio cameras.  I hope you enjoy this series as much as the first.  So without further ado…

During the shoot, two of my favorite Portrait Photographers in California  (Meg Messina and Christine Zona) were documenting the magic behind the scenes. You can visit their amazing blogs to hear their thoughts on the project, and see their behind the scenes photos:

DIARY OF PANCAKE//FINE ART DOG PHOTOGRAPHER JESSE FREIDIN

So, my dog has his own vlog (that’s ‘video log’, in case my internet-savvy lingo was a little over your head). He makes me follow him around and take videos (he can’t press the buttons because he doesn’t have opposable thumbs. likely excuse.), and then he makes me upload them and edit them as he peers over my shoulder and makes sure I’m showing his good side. Gosh- he’s so bossy sometimes! Anyway, his vlog is called Diary of Pancake, and it’s better than cable. Here is Pancake’s very first entry (where we go on a hike and take pictures. Because that’s just what we do)

LA LOVE STORY//FINE ART DOG PHOTOGRAPHER JESSE FREIDIN

Los Angeles, you overwhelm me. You are overstimulating and beautiful at the same time, a tiny vacation from the blander Bay Area. Your dog stores are amazing, your hills are amazing, your old signs and art-deco buildings are amazing, and your peeling paint and quirky stores, too. Unfortunately, I’ve been so busy photographing some incredible clients these past few days that I hardly have had time to stop and document the madness! But, here are some silly images of the most crucial part of this LA Excursion 2010: my team.

Welcome to my team. They make me look good. Tonight, we celebrated our successful take-over of Los Angeles by dining on my favorite meal of all time: Pho.

And then we ran into the Los Angeles Lomography Headquarters. I was in plastic camera heaven. I drooled on the tables and tables of Holgas and Dianas and splitzer filters and fish eye lenses and instant backs and one-of-a-kind, hard-to-find plastic fantastic colors. I left empty-handed, but that happens a lot to me when I go to camera shops. I just get so overwhelmed that I can buy anything.

The real Los Angeles photos will be posted shortly. I’ve got almost 100 rolls of film to process when I get back. So, give me a few days in the dark room to catch up. You won’t be sorry, I can say that much…

FALLING IN LOVE WITH Rt.66//FINE ART DOG PHOTOGRAPHER JESSE FREIDIN

When I left my small town on the rural East Coast and headed to sunny California, I knew I was in for adventure. I saved up some money from painting houses for a year, and planned a 2 week cross-country road trip along the famous Rt.66. What, do you ask, did I bring with me on this life-changing excursion into the unknown?

You guessed it: 25 Polaroid cameras and a coller full of instant film.

Ok ok- I shoved a suitcase full of clothes in there, too. And maybe some snacks and my phone and a bunch of road maps. Oh, and some good company. But mostly it was my cameras. I was chauffeuring them across country, taking them to see the sites. And I couldn’t have been happier. My road trip along Rt.66 was one of the most inspiring, creative moments of my life. There was no expectation, no rush, no rules. I had created a situation for myself in which I was facing beauty, color, texture, openness every day for 2 weeks. I explored every abandoned building and broke-down gas station I came across, ate home-made pies in Texas, tortillas in New Mexico, terrible fake-vegetables in the MidWest…. and in the end I created an opus of instant work that I will forever be proud of.

In order not to bore you to tears, here are just a few of my favorites. I felt like I could drink in the blue skies through my cameras, and ended up with boxes and boxes of Polaroids when I finally arrived in San Francisco. One day, I’ll go back. But for now, enjoy these: (all images taken with a Spectra Polaroid camera, Spectra/Image film)(and yes of course I also shot my LandCameras, but that will be another post)

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH THE MAN//FINE ART DOG PHOTOGRAPHER JESSE FREIDIN

A big HELLO to the world of dogs and their humans!  I’m Diana [aka DC].  Recently, I was blessed with an amazing opportunity to intern as an assistant and project organizer for Jesse.  It has been both a ton of fun and hard work (but completely worth it!) as I get to learn from one of the best in what he does!  Yes, I work for Pancake as well – to him, I am one of his many human pillows.

Jesse dedicates a lot of his time, energy, and passion into his fine art dog photography.  His pieces are vivid and captures the complete emotions and souls of the dogs.  What you see in those photographs are the end results of talent and hard work.  However, I feel that everyone should be allowed a few glimpses of what goes on behind the scenes at one of his sessions.  I had the incredible job of taking these shots of Jesse working with Jennings, a handsome nine year old golden retriever.  It was a great day for the photographer, the dog, and the intern.  I’ll be keeping you posted with more fun stuff like this in the future.  Awesomeness.  Until next time!

GETTING READY FOR ROUND 2//FINE ART DOG PHOTOGRAPHER JESSE FREIDIN

So, the madness of Doggie Gaga Round 2 is in full effect… costumes are being made, supplies are being gathered, trips to the hardware store are being arranged. It’s very exciting. What is in store for you, the viewer? Well, nothing less than amazement and magic, all rolled into one. Though we’ve had request from literally all over the world for high-production, digitally produced, flashy fancy Doggie Gaga photos- we will not abide. The Doggie Gaga Project is my alter-ego. It is the colorful, fantastic, playful side-kick to my more refined Fine Art dog portraiture. It is completely in line with my creative vision, and my undying love and loyalty to analog photography.

So, we’re keeping things exactly the same: dogs in home-made costumes, instant film, big studio camera, lots of smiles and tail-wags. It is a recipe for success, so why tinker with it? If you’re like most people, you’re probably on the edge of your seats, waiting to see what costumes we come up next, and what dogs find themselves in front of my camera. Well to be honest, I’m pretty excited, too. You’ll just have to be patient, but the best way to keep up with the hottest Doggie Gaga news is to become a fan on FACEBOOK. What better way to get live updates? It’s sort of like a personal shoulder-tap from me. Hey, here’s the new stuff, come check it out.

And what’s the most EXCITING part of Doggie Gaga Round 2? Well, I’ve brought in a crew of videographers and still photographers to document the entire process, which means you’ll get a back-stage pass to the behind the scenes action and antics of our shoot! How fun. Stay tuned. You don’t want to miss this.

And, in case you need something to do today while at your desk, or on your lunch break, how about VOTING FOR ME!?
